2014 Dodge Avenger

Having to compete in the mid-sized sedan class is not an easy task with such perennial powerhouses as Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Nissan Altima, not to mention the redesigns of the Ford Fusion and Chevrolet Malibu, the Dodge Avenger has to be very special to get noticed among this bunch of bruisers. The Avenger not only get a notice, but stands out in this crowd with the uniquely Dodge muscular looks and a well-mannered driving experience the Avenger has critics and fans alike falling in love.

One such expert organization that took notice of the Avenger is the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) which awarded the Avenger with its Top Safety Pick Award for 2014. Couple this with its good looks, some great features, and a nice low price and this car is on to consider for a family sedan or everyday commuter. According to Miami Dodge, the Avenger shows up as a fun to drive sedan with a superior suspension, on point steering and comfortable braking allowing the car to feel much more like a high-performance sports car with its smooth handling and road soaking suspension. Even though the 2.4-liter engine offers plenty of quickness and power to handle any traffic or road situation those looking for more power need look no farther than the available Pentastar 3.6-liter V6 engine.

Speaking of engines, the base model comes in with the 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder offering that shows up with 173 horsepower and 166 lb.-ft. of torque. Even with its small size and numbers, this engine is perfectly capable of handling any traffic conditions thrown its way. When matched up with the four-speed automatic transmission this powertrain has a fuel efficiency of 21 city/30 hwy mpg while when fitted with the six-speed automatic the fuel efficiency results in 20 city/31 hwy mpg.

Next up is the much more powerful 3.6-liter V6 Pentastar engine which is available for the SE and SXT models and comes standard on the R/T. Offering a full 283 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque this engine shows up as the most powerful in the class. This powerful motor can only be partnered with the six-speed automatic with offers the owner 19 city/29 hwy mpg for gasoline while using the E85 will result in 14 city/21 hwy mpg. Seeing the mpg only lower slightly to put this powerful V6 under the hood, this should be the engine many shoppers choose to experience the best driving experience Avenger has to offer.

The cabin of this well-powered car offers excellent materials throughout almost allowing the driver to forget it’s a mid-sized sedan. Offering all controls in easily found places, excellent and interesting patters over the upholstery along with a very quiet ride for those who prefer to hear their music and not the road, the interior is excellent, especially for the price paid. If the R/T trim is chosen a set of sportier seats with leather bolsters are in place along with an upgraded gauge cluster and race inspired pedals. The 60/40 split rear seat offers plenty of room for adults to feel comfortable and folds down to offer more cargo room when needed.

On the outside the Avenger is full of angry muscle looks while still coming off as a sensible family sedan. With a snub-nosed look to the front and a gritty feeling grill and intake port flanked by huge headlights the front appears to want to eat up the road and ask for more. With excellently designed fender arches, strong lines all over the body, this car really has attitude and presence on the road. The Avenger appears just as menacing going as it does coming with a lined up fender line extended to the rear and a matched set of taillights. A rear spoiler can be added to give an even sportier look and when the V6 engine is chosen dual exhaust tips are in place to add a bit more of a power look to the rear, as if it really needed more. To finish off the outside is a star inspired set of 17-inch wheels as standard with an 18-inch set optional.

The Avenger comes standard with air conditioning with a filtration system, cruise control, keyless entry, automatic mirrors and door locks, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, 60/40 split rear folding bench, and a four-speaker audio system with satellite radio with an auxiliary port all for the base model. Moving up to the SXT model will add the six-speed automatic transmission, an eight-way power driver’s seat, automatic climate control and a six speaker audio system. Once in the R/T model the V6 engine is standard as well as leather seats, 18-inch aluminum wheels, Uconnect hands free phone system, a media center with a 6.5-inch display, six Boston speakers, and a 40-gigabyte hard drive. Even though the list, especially at the base model is not extensive, it is well thought out and handles many of the features most sought after.

Offering a nice set of optional features the Avenger can be set up with a Uconnect infotainment system complete with touch-screen and hard drive, a navigation system, a power sunroof, the SE can be set up with the more powerful V6 engine if desired, an engine block heater, heated front seats, and the Rallye Appearance Group for the SXT which offers the 18-inch wheels, a trunk-mounted spoiler, and two-toned black and red cloth upholstery. These options can really increase the look, feel and fun of the Avenger to change what is a nice family sedan into a seriously sporty and quick sports sedan for anyone to enjoy.

Carrying the tag as the most affordable mid-sized sedan the Avenger starts out with a base price just under $20,000 and even when equipped with the powerful V6 engine at an increase of only $595 becomes the most affordable V6 sedan on the market. Heading to the top of the line; a fully loaded R/T shows up with a still fairly reasonable $28,000 price tag which is a ton of car for the money and respectable fuel efficiency offered by the R/T model.

Overall the 2014 Dodge Avenger has found a way to stand out among the crowd and massive competition offered in the mid-sized sedan class. As an IIHS Top Safety Pick and the most affordable sedan on the market the Avenger certainly requires attention. If a car buyer is looking for a great family car, daily commuter, or even just loves the menacing look Dodge has put on the road they will find it in the Avenger very easily.
